A legend returns?
When first I learned that they where posthumously releasing some of Cash’s previously unheard songs on one album I was hard pressed not to not cry with excitement. I have been a fan of the Man In Black for many years just like anybody who fell in love with ‘Walk The Line’ when they first heard it. Unfortunately you are going to be incredibly disappointed if you wanted to hear the gritty songs of an original rebel. Most of these recordings come from the 80s when Cash seemed to be going through a bit of a rocky patch. This album is littered with so many ‘run of the mill’ country tunes with too much slide guitar that Cash most likely deemed not worthy of release but people have decided to go ahead and do it anyway. It’s not all bad. The single ‘She Used To Love Me A Lot’ is a powerful version of David Allan Coe’s 1984 single and is complete with a stirring monologue spoken Cash’s own iconic deep voice an accompanied with a suitably melancholy video.
I can’t help but think that Cash was joking when he wrote some of these songs. However, whether its release was done out nostalgia or monetary gain (the latter most likely) this record is not how I want to remember the music of Johnny Cash. Il stick with ‘At Folsom Prison’ thanks.
I wouldn’t bother.
