Sun Kil Moon is the pseudonym of American Folk Guitarist Mark Kozelek and Benji is his sixth studio album under this name. Much like some of his previous records this one is a simple. No overwhelming synth, cinematic strings, hand claps or gang vocals just guitar, his voice and the occasional appearance of some percussion.

This record is simple but effective. It seems Kozelek has set out to cram in as many of his own experiences good and bad as well as the experiences of others. Kozelek has a very frank way of writing, heard at its best in ‘I Love My Dad’ showing that saying you love your dad isn’t just reserved for a Facebook status once a year on fathers day. He seems to cut the crappy metaphors that we all are so used to, occasionally making some of the songs hard to listen to but ultimately staying true to story telling.

Benji contains some hard-hitting songs mixed in with a few quaint memories of childhood when times seemed to be simpler. This is some of the most honest song writing I have heard in a long time.
